Backup 3.1.1 is available to .Mac members by selecting the Backup icon on the .Mac website and via Automatic Software Update to .Mac members who have already installed a previous version of Backup.

What’s New in this Version

- Backup 3.1.1 is highly recommended for all users of Backup 3. Significant areas addressed are:
- Backup and restore with external drives
- Memory management
- Restore of bundled file types

Has Apple tried to hide it on Macs (till MacWorld?), but Windows users have spotted an upgrade to .Mac storage on their machines, as MacDailyNews reports.

One user, running an Intel Mac, has posted a video on YouTube, showing the new storage capacity. .Mac storage currently stands at 1GB.

If you are a .Mac member, you probably already know that Apple updated the .Mac webmail interface on Friday. The new interface is nearly identical to that of Mac OS X’s Mail application. One can choose a 2-pane or 3-pane interface with the latter including a preview pane.

The .Mac webmail one-ups Mail by including the beginning of every message in the subject line space. One can choose “Short” or “Long” message previews–the latter takes up two lines.

Macworld UK reports that Apple has quietly added a new feature to .Mac, making it easier to share files with non-members.

“An announcement on the .Mac blog (which is only accessible to subscribers to the service), reveals that Apple has made it easier for non-members to access a subscriber’s iDisk Public folder using a web browser. ‘We’re pleased to announce a new simpler way to access iDisk Public folders with a browser. Simply entering the URL idisk.mac.com/membername-Public now produces a page that automatically includes download links for whatever’s currently in a member’s Public folder,’” More …

# Apple releases Backup 3.1 |

Apple has released Backup 3.1 (6MB). As one might expect, this dot-fix is recommended for all users.

• Improved support for iDisk, local hard drives and some network destinations (these features require Tiger)
• New iWeb QuickPick and updated iLife plan
• Addresses issues with restoring files

According to AppleInsider, sales of Intel Macs are reported to be better than Apple expected. .Macs sales are up and the credit goes to .iLife and especially iWeb. Apple has relented about charging for the Universal Binary version of Aperture.. Also, Thunderbird will acquire the ability to import Address Book data. More …

World of Apple reports “.Mac seems to now be featuring 1TB (1024GB) of bandwidth every month. The figure can be seen in your account settings.” They have a screen capture of a users account settings.

Apparently .Mac is no longer displaying the bandwidth info. This may have been premature. Someone is going to be in trouble.
