# iWork in the work place |

Intezyne, a biotech company, is not large, with 11 personnel. They had the typical problems with the darkside (not Darkside, the screensaver for Macs in the classic days). Small companies do not have the IS/IT staff that larger companies can afford and, in today’s world, the lack of security required will quickly down a less supported network.

What should be interesting to anyone contemplating this move, is the professionalism and cross compatibility that exists with iWork, especially the presentation software Keynote. Their customers and investors were impressed, and I have to think so were their personnel. Nothing sells the Mac better than seeing it in action. Read how they did it. More …

I have used Keynote a number of times for presentations. When in a panel, Keynote easily imported the other panelist’s PowerPoint presentations. I recommend a wireless presenter, which allows you to be any where in the room, rather than a infrared device (also wireless), which is line of site, limiting your movement and requiring you to point the remote directly at the receiving end of the USB receiving station.

# iLife 08 and iWork 08 |

iLife 08:

iPhoto ‘08 automatically organizes photo libraries into Events that let users more easily manage their growing photo collections, and iMovie ‘08 introduces an entirely new way for users to quickly make movies and share them online. Both iPhoto and iMovie integrate seamlessly with the new .Mac Web Gallery, Apple’s new service for .Mac members to instantly create and host stunning online websites for their photos and videos. iLife ‘08 also features iWeb ‘08, with live web widgets such as Google Maps that let users create even more dynamic websites, and GarageBand ‘08, with its new Magic GarageBand feature that makes it fun and easy for both musicians and non-musicians to create great sounding songs.

iWork 08:

A significant upgrade to Apple’s productivity software suite featuring new versions of Pages and Keynote word processing and presentation applications, and introducing an innovative new spreadsheet application called “Numbers.” Numbers introduces the concept of intelligent tables on a flexible canvas, a new approach that makes it easy to organize information, create calculations, analyze results and make spreadsheets look as great as they work. Pages ‘08 now features distinct modes for streamlined word processing and flexible page layout, a new contextual format bar and change tracking, and Keynote ‘08 now includes text effects, transitions and themes that help users easily compose spectacular presentations, and Smart Builds with easy-to-set-up A-to-B animations that make impressive animations easy for anyone to create.

ThinkSecret brings news that iWork ‘07 will launch next week and include a spreadsheet application. Here are a few of the functions that are said to be part of Apple’s challenge to Microsoft’s Excel:

• 200 functions, including conditional formatting
• Full for support for importing / exporting Excel docs
• Easy, first-rate templates

The update announced yesterday was acknowledged by Microsoft to have been released premature: .

We’ve seen some questions from customers about some security updates that posted for a while today for Office for Mac that they didn’t see any security bulletins for. I wanted to let you know that these weren’t security updates related to this month’s release or the two Word issues we’ve written about in Security Advisory 929433 and on our weblog: those investigations are still underway and we’ll release updates for those issues once we’ve met the appropriate quality bar. The updates posted in error were pre-release binaries that had been staged internally as part of our testing for an upcoming release. Due to human error, they were accidentally published to the public websites before our full testing release process was complete. As soon as we discovered the error, we moved quickly to address it and remove the pre-release binaries from our public sites.
Once our investigation into this issue is complete and we have security updates that meet our quality bar for release, we’ll release those final security updates for all products affected along with a security bulletin. We’re also taking steps to ensure a mistake like this doesn’t happen again. We recommend that anyone who may have installed these pre-release updates to uninstall them. […]

It has been a while since our last look at OpenOffice. X11 has not been updated, and there apparently no request that there need be. According to Technovia, OpenOffice that has been improved. OpenOffice has always been a full featured office suite. I wonder if the author would be more pleased with iWorks if there was a spreadsheet program?

ThinkSecret reports that Apple will release a spreadsheet application as part of its iWork ‘07 release at next year’s Macworld San Francisco. Budded “Charts,” won’t be positioned as an Excel killer, but rather as a consumer-friendly spreadsheet:

Nonetheless, Charts will support importing and exporting Excel formatted documents, as well as legacy AppleWorks spreadsheets, and Apple is hoping the performance of Charts will at least rival that of Excel…
