A Security patch

A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the UPnP IGD (Internet Gateway Device Standardized Device Control Protocol) code used to create Port Mappings on home NAT gateways in the Apple TV implementation. By sending a maliciously crafted packet, a remote attacker can trigger the overflow which may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation when processing UPnP protocol packets. Credit to Michael Lynn of Juniper Networks for reporting this issue. More …

Recently, Apple announced that Apple TV would run YouTube video. now we know how it is to be done. H.264 is, of course, QuickTime movie format, quite compatible with Apple TV. Mac360 points out, M$$$ is left out of the equation, not true for PC iTunes users.

Apple announced that it is offering a new Apple TV build-to-order option with a 160GB hard disk drive. The standard Apple TV hard disk drive is a mere 40GB. The higher capacity hard drive could benefit those whose Apple TV accesses multiple Apple TV with a 160GB hard drive is available today for a suggested retail price of $399, the 40 GB model at $299, not bad for 4x increase

Beginning in mid-June, Apple TV will wirelessly stream videos directly from YouTube and play them on a user’s widescreen TV. YouTube will add thousands each week until the full YouTube catalog is available this fall

Engadget reports that Apple is not disabling hacks for the Apple TV through a backdoor mechanism. “We had a word with Apple yesterday about the Apple TV — specifically about that supposed backdoor. We asked whether enthusiasts really are in fact having services and hacks shut down through surreptitious software updates and backdoors into the Apple TV, to which Apple let us know that is absolutely not the case.” More …

MacRumors reviews the Apple TV ($299) and that in most aspects considers it mediocre. I wonder if it is because it is being compared to a Netgear EVA8000 ($349), in spite of only working with doorstops, but can search for media anywhere in the C: drive and whose video is topnotch. More …
