Mactel-Linux has announced the achievement of a major milestone in their quest to port the open-source OS to Mactel hardware—Linux boots on the 17″ iMac Core Duo.
“Using elilo and a modified Linux kernel, we can boot from a USB hard disk on the 17-inch iMac Core Duo. We are using the hacked vesafb driver to inherit the bootloader’s framebuffer, keyboard and a USB network card work. Gentoo runs and can compile the Linux kernel.”

Mice, keyboards from Logitech, Kensington or M$$$$ will have problems working, as there no drivers for the Intel Macs.
SteerMouse (shareware), supports USB and Bluetooth mice. It will even work with mice designed for Windows PCs. It is also available as a Universal Binary that runs on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, and allows several areas of customization not available with Apple’s drivers, including double-clicks, modifier clicks, application switching, assignment of shortcut keys, ’snap to’ cursor movement, which moves the cursor to target (such as an OK button), and more.

In an article in the Japanese magazine MacFan a reader claims to have upgraded the processor in a 17-inch Intel iMac from 1.83GHz to 2.0GHz without issue.”

MacWorld magazine recently reported that the new Apple iMac Core Duo doesn’t live up to Apple’s speed claims.
MacSpeedZone’s tests show that the new iMac Core Duo does live up to the hype. Not only did the new iMac wipe the floor with the old model in their tests, but using MacWorld’s own test methodology would allow MacSpeedZone to conclude that the new Intel iMac is almost as fast as a PowerMac Quad G5.
