But this may all be changing, Yager writes. Apple has two ‘featured’ sessions at Intel’s Developer Conference, including one sprucing up OS X.

Macworld UK reports on the experience of installing Windows Vista RC1 on a MacBook Pro. “Getting Vista RC1 up and running was relatively painless. After installing Boot Camp and creating a 20GB partition on my MacBook Pro’s hard drive, I slipped in the Vista installation disk and pretty much let it install as I had on my Vaio. After that was done, I ejected the Vista disk and inserted the disk containing Mac drivers. Here’s where I ran into some problems: The drivers failed to install. I’m not surprised, given that Apple provides drivers only for Windows XP Service Pack 2, but I figured I’d try anyway.” More …

Apple KB article: “AppleWorks versions earlier than 6.2 cannot be installed on Intel-based Macs. The earlier versions of the installers require Mac OS 9 or Classic for installation, which is not available for the Intel-based computers.”

RoughlyDrafted says that Apple has leapt a generation ahead of other PC makers in adopting Intel’s modern EFI in its new new Intel Macs. “Apple’s adoption of EFI in their new Intel Macs will likely force PC makers to get on the stick and find ways to catch up to Apple’s lead. More …

digit compares the Xeon 5100 architecture (used in Mac Pros) to the AMD Opteron 2000 series.

The results show that Intel has reclaimed its crown in a majestical fashion. The Xeon 5150s were 35 per cent faster in Maya software renderer and 16 per cent faster in mental ray than the Opteron 2218s. Intel’s chips also gave an 18 per cent boost to Photoshop over AMD’s rival. The performance over the Power PC G5s was equally impressive. The 5150’s Maya software rendering time was a whopping 90 per cent faster, and its mental ray score was 32 per cent faster. It was also 27 per cent faster in Photoshop - though this is not something you could translate to the new Mac Pros as an Intel-native version of Photoshop is still at least six months away. More …

Ars Technica reports that Parallels Desktop has made its way into retail Apple stores. “In a phone conversation this morning, a company representative stated that Parallels’ desktop software has been made available in at least some Apple retail stores as early as this past Saturday, July 15th.
