Cosmos details how the full range of satellite technology is used to locate ruins not seen for thousands of years. Most of the clues are in visible light and therefore seen from any source, Including the pictures used by Google Earth. Google Earth’s satellite pics are up to 2 years old and normally considered a weakness as nothing recent is viewed. This weakness disappears when trying to find ruins that may have been built 2000 BC, well within Google Earth’s capability. A very interesting article. More …

Bob Shayler ordered AppleWorks from the Education Store this weekend, with a delivery date of 3 to 4 weeks. He received confirmation today that AppleWorks had shipped. Bob went on to say that at a meeting of the East Bay User Group, two Apple employees stated that AppleWorks would ship from the Education Store as long as supplies last, then that is it. All support for AppleWorks has been discontinued

SeekingAlpha reports that RBC Capital Markets, an international corporate and investment bank, is predicting 2 million in Mac sales due to the back to school quarter. More …

The iPhone is having it influence. It is one thing to have the advance publicity and hype surrounding the release of the iPhone. eMediaWire is reporting a surge in Apple laptop sales, close to what was reported before. More …

There is not much evidence in the second article tying the iPhone to the increased laptop sales. At this point who is to say this isn’t also evidence of school year purchases? Laptops are becoming the computer of choice for schools, whether secondary school or higher education (not counting Maine)

Senior Lead Program Manager on Windows Live Hotmail, Omar Shahine, did have this to say about Apple:

I think Apple has already become the best PC OEM … Apple somehow manages to place all the required drivers on a single CD [Boot Camp] you can burn yourself with a single installer. Why can’t anyone else [Ed—Microsoft?] do this is beyond me.

# AppleWorks is finally dead |

It is no longer on life support. The download page now leads you in a circle, or you are re-directed to a page that tells you the page you want no longer exists (rather than re-directing you to iWork). Some think it may still be available in the Apple Education Store, but no promises.

Some products didn’t deserve to die, but they did, because the companies made bad business decisions. Great designers often do not make even good managers. CIO’s “Dearly Departed”, revisits several favorites — from minicomputers to software utilities. Names will be familiar to most of you. Always fun. More …

According to MacFixIt, connecting a Mac OS 9 (or earlier) computer and a 10.4.9 computer, using Apple File Sharing, have been unable to transfer files between the two computers.

Apple has a solution; in the Terminal, enter this command on a single line, and hit Return:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer TCPQuantum -int 327680

(Make sure the command is all on one line, the format can be seen in the KB article)

According to the article:

Adjusting the TCPQuantum parameter for the AFP server will apparently prevent the timeouts and disconnects between the two operating systems. TCPQuantum in AFP-speak represents a maximum size for a block of data being transferred to or from an AFP server; increasing the amount lowers the number of requests the server has to make for data at the expense of a gradual increase in overhead. Brieitbart has 10 of April Fool’s Day hoaxes, “as judged by the San Diego-based Museum of Hoaxes for their notoriety, absurdity, and number of people duped.” I remember the 1985 Sports Illustrated magazine article about the the young kid who could throw a baseball faster than anyone in history. I remember the excitement. There was something in the article that revealed it as a hoax, fun none the less. More …

InfoWorld is convinced that Apple has plenty of corporate integration initiatives. The article points out that Mac OS X Server supports FTP, DNS, and DHCP. POP and IMAP mail, Xsan and Xgrid add storage-area networking and clustering options, together with an unlimited client license. Apple also has open source packages such as Apache, Jabber, Kerberos, OpenLDAP, Postfix, Samba, and SpamAssassin, integrated in a single interface; What IT would not be in love with this package?
