We are a week away from when the 3G iPhone will be introduced. The WWDC is not normally used to announce new products, but this exception is justified. The 3G iPhone opens a new avenue for software developers. Recognizing this caused the WWDC to close attendance, as for the first time ever the maximum 5000 was reached.

Times UK continues the tradition of trying to guess what features will be revealed June 9, from the British perspective. Regardless, the next iPhone will be winner, if only for the 3rd party applications. Yet, it is clear that will not be the most important heard by the waiting public.

# .Mac to get a new name |

Macworld blog rummer has tuned up more substantial evidence that Apple is changing the name of .Mac to Apple’s online service. Is that evidence Apple intends to make.Mac cross platform? No word of any new features

The Register reports on a 1TB optical drive by Call/Recall in partnership with Nichia. The drive and disc will be Blu-ray compatible. Nichia’s blue-violet laser diodes (Blu-ray), are used in the new technology. A 200 plus layer medium is the ticket. To read the data a rhodamine-type dye is used, giving off light when excited by a laser beam through the 200 layers. A single fluid-filled lens varying the amount of fluid changes the focal length to read various layers.

Call/Recall, what a name. Does it remind you of cold calling or retuning every call before you end the day?

One more thing.

Server Admin Tools 10.5.3 contain remote administration tools, documentation, and utilities that you can install on a computer other than your server. This version is required to administer Mac OS X Server version 10.5.3 from a remote Mac client.

# Mac OS X 10.5.3 |

The combo update is 536MB and the server combo is a whopping 632MB. The install took a while, how long I do not know as I went out to do my Wednesday watering. The re-start did not take any longer than normal, even though there are reports of lengthy re-starts. Everything looks good and already this update is the most stable operating system I have ever used. OK, I have said that will every update since Mac OS 7.0,

About the Mac OS X 10.5.3 update has a very long list of what is included in the update.

The update comes in a number of flavors:

# .Mac unwanted renewals |

Today’s MacInTouch DotMac reader report has a discussion about unwanted renewals, describing some very interesting credit card processes today and explains how activation codes enable renewals.

The latest update to developer has not known issues, leading MacScoop to think the release date is not far ahead. A large update, most exciting, besides the bug fixes, is some performance tweaks to the kernel. A more snappy and stable version of Mac OS X 10.5 should bring in more of the holdouts.

# The Phoenix has landed |

Using the first powered landing since Viking, Phoenix as landed safely on the North pole of Mars. Space.com has excellent information and some photos from the surface.
