Twice I have used total shutdown to fix what appears to be OS corruption. Once, I could not play any music. Another time the battery was lasting only a day. Both times a total shutdown returned the iPhone to normal operation.

The iPhone OS has a subset of  Mac OS X 10.5. so corruption should not be a surprise, and not just because of 10.5. Those that basically keep their iPhone turned on (only one click on the power button) will experience disruption in normal operation. Holding down the power button longer will active the total shutdown. This will cause a total reset or restart. Click the power button and you are back in operation.

The Hard Drive Update 1.0 includes bug fixes and important updates for the following systems: iMac Core 2 Duo (Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later) and Mac Pro (Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later)

To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/Hard Drive Update 1.0.app). The updater will launch automatically when the Installer closes.

The update may state it is not required, as it is not for all iMacs or Mac Pros that would appear to qualify.
