Update: Choose the Intel Universal Binary, as the PPC version is for OS 9

Installer.app handles installing, updating and uninstalling 3rd party applications. The Installer.app is in beta, but reports are positive. The Installer.app is only installed on the iPhone via a Mac with easy to follow instructions provided by Gizmodo. The Installer.app makes it so easy to do what previous attempt made so difficult. It works by downloading packages over WiFi (wireless networking) or EDGE.

It is recommended you only try Installer.app after updating your iPhone to 1.0.2. This will save a number of headaches.

Update: There is a launcher available among the initial applications, which is recommended first, as after the first two applications you install, all others will be below and out of sight of the iPhone window.

# iPhone 1.0.2 |

There is only this about the update: This version of the software includes bug fixes and supersedes all previous versions.

This update can only be installed through iTunes. As noted by iPhoneAtlas, this update will reverse most previous hacks, but the recently announced Installer.app will require a total restoring of the iPhone as the application prevents the update from installing successfully.

# Camino 1.5.1 |

Camino 151 is now using version 1.8.1.6 of the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine. Bugs fixed include crashing when right-clicking in certain web page menus; alerts and prompts display properly whether Camino is hidden or visible; no longer auto-fill passwords in disabled fields; and improved ad-blocking. Bob Shayler ordered AppleWorks from the Education Store this weekend, with a delivery date of 3 to 4 weeks. He received confirmation today that AppleWorks had shipped. Bob went on to say that at a meeting of the East Bay User Group, two Apple employees stated that AppleWorks would ship from the Education Store as long as supplies last, then that is it. All support for AppleWorks has been discontinued

SeekingAlpha reports that RBC Capital Markets, an international corporate and investment bank, is predicting 2 million in Mac sales due to the back to school quarter. More …

The iPhone is having it influence. It is one thing to have the advance publicity and hype surrounding the release of the iPhone. eMediaWire is reporting a surge in Apple laptop sales, close to what was reported before. More …

There is not much evidence in the second article tying the iPhone to the increased laptop sales. At this point who is to say this isn’t also evidence of school year purchases? Laptops are becoming the computer of choice for schools, whether secondary school or higher education (not counting Maine)

Senior Lead Program Manager on Windows Live Hotmail, Omar Shahine, did have this to say about Apple:

I think Apple has already become the best PC OEM … Apple somehow manages to place all the required drivers on a single CD [Boot Camp] you can burn yourself with a single installer. Why can’t anyone else [Ed—Microsoft?] do this is beyond me.

As it is iMovie 08 which is making the minimum requirements of a G5, this is the likely reason iMovie 6 was made available to iLife ‘08 users, or rather G4 users. Every other component of iLife ‘08 will run on a G4. More …,

# AT&T is killing less trees |

Wired reports that as of August 10th AT&T is switching iPhone customers to summary billing, which should greatly reduce the number of printed pages people get in the mail from the carrier. However, if you insist you can have the expanded version for $1.99 per month. More …

# AppleWorks is finally dead |

It is no longer on life support. The download page now leads you in a circle, or you are re-directed to a page that tells you the page you want no longer exists (rather than re-directing you to iWork). Some think it may still be available in the Apple Education Store, but no promises.

From the Read Me:

This update addresses issues with upgrading and publishing iWeb 1.x websites.

Web 2.0.1 is available via Software Update, or as a stand-alone updater from Apple’s support downloads page.
