Linux Box Admin: In 1995, Microsoft added long file name support to Windows, allowing more descriptive names than the limited 8.3 DOS format. Mac users scoffed, having had long file names for a decade and because Windows still stored a DOS file name in the background. BBC News: A magnetic memory chip has been manufactured in volume and released by the U.S. company Freescale. Christened MRAM (magnetoresistive random-access memory),this chip will hold information even after power has been switched off.

Unlike flash memory, which also can keep data without power, Mram has faster read and write speeds and does not degrade over time,’ and ‘MRAM chips could one day be used in PCs to store an operating system, allowing computers to start up faster when switched on. More …

Ars Technica notes a tiny AppleScript that allows QuickTime Player to display movies fullscreen without the purchase of QuickTime Pro.

Ars Technica has an in depth review of Parallels Workstation. Though user feedback to date has been positive, the nerd’s source for news goes over-the-top in passing judgement:

Move over emulation, virtualization is in and it’s hotter than two Jessica Albas wresting the devil himself in a pit of molten steel. It’s no contest, virtualization has it all: multiple operating systems running on the same machine at nearly the full speed of the host’s processor with each system seamlessly networking with the next. Add to that the fact that it’s cheaper than getting a new machine and you have the guaranteed latest craze.

# Music downloads leap 68% |

Quoting recently released industry figures, Motley Fool reports that legal music downloads accounted for 12.1 percent of the overall market in the first half of 2006. These statistics indicate 68 percent growth over the same period last year:

• 280-million singles vs 159 million
• 14-million albums vs 6.5 million

This more recent report stands in stark contrast to late-June punditry that claimed downloads had stagnated.
