According to CNet, phishers are sending emails disguised as coming from the IRS to victims stating that they have a tax refund of $571.94. The bogus email has a real U.S. government URL (GovBenefits.gov) but a flaw in coding the web site permits the phisher to bounce the email to their own bogus IRS web site to collect sensitive data.

The updater only affects the iPod shuffle and it is available from the Software Update application or as a standalone file.

According to the Read me file,

iPod Updater 2005-11-17 includes new iPod Software 1.1.3 for iPod shuffle. iPod Updater 2005-11-17 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2005-10-12 for all other iPod models.

According to AppleInsider, The iTunes universal binary is one of over fifteen significant changes listed alongside the recent Developer Transition Kit seeding of Mac OS X 10.4.3 Intel build 8F1111.

Wal-Mart on Tuesday said sales during this year’s “Black Friday” shopping bonanza faired much better than last, due partly to a more desirable selection consumer products like Apple’s iPod.

Business Week has an article describing how Sony BMG had been warned by F-Secure on Oct. 4 about the dangers of their rootkit protection, but failed to do anything until Oct. 31 when computer-systems expert Mark Russinovich revealed the rootkit in his blog.” From the article: “Sony BMG officials insist that they acted as quickly as they could, and that they expected to be able to go public and offer a software patch at the same time. However, Russinovich posted his blog item first, forcing Sony BMG to scramble to contain the crisis. It recalled millions of CDs recorded by 52 artists, including Van Zant, Celine Dion, and Neil Diamond. Plus, it offered exchanges to customers.”

A (10.3 and 10.4) security update has been released. Of course, client and server versions are available for direct download, or via the always convenient Software Update.

# Firefox 1.5 released |

I have been using Firefox 1.5 rc2 (release canidate 2) for a couple of days and I was totally satisfied. I guess the Mozilla group agreed.

Mozilla Foundation has finally announced the release of the full version of Firefox 1.5.

Plugins

A MacInTouch reader noted Safari slowdowns and CPU hogging prior following a suggestion to update Flash to address this problem. Flash and Shockwave plugins are necessary for a lot of web content.
